We are well into the 2012 Hurricane Season
Traditionally, August and September are peak times for hurricane activities.

“Don’t allow complacency to become your disaster”

The best time to prepare for a disaster is RIGHT NOW!  Before it strikes

Hurricane Information - Hurricanes and tropical storms are cyclones with tropical origins.  When the sustained winds of a tropical storm (winds 39 to 73 MPH) reach a constant speed of 74 MPH or more, it is called a hurricane.  Hurricane winds blow in a large spiral around a relatively calm center known as the “eye.”  The “eye” is generally 20-30 miles wide, and the storm may have a diameter of 400 miles across.  A hurricane can bring torrential rains, high winds and storm surge as it nears land.  More dangerous than the high winds of a hurricane is the storm surge - a dome of ocean water that can be 20 feet high and 50 to 100 miles wide.

Develop a Plan – Plan your work and then work your plan.  Your most valuable resources for any disaster is to know what to do and in some cases knowing what not to do.  Know your hospital plan (Review desktop Emergency Management Program) and establish your own for home to include care for the elderly, children and pets.  Use the FEMA link below to develop your plan.  http://www.ready.gov/

Communications – Have a battery powered radio in the home, try to keep cell phones charged, establish a central point for all family members to report in during a disaster.  Identify a contact out of state or away from the disaster area it’s always a good idea.

Supplies – Stock up with non-perishables, water, batteries, bags of ice, lights, fuel, generators, and other items that are important to you.

Grab bags – Grab items…grab your love ones, grab bags, grab papers, grab keys and stay ready to move when required.

Physical Environment – Tree limbs, power lines, and trash cans, unsecured items on the porch and around your home.  Identify the safest areas within the building or home to shelter in place.  In the pantry, closets, rooms away from windows or glass.
