Fayetteville VA Medical Center Prepares for Computer Server Upgrades
Public asked to minimize calls to med ctr Saturday to conserve energy

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – In preparation for installation of a new computer server, the Fayetteville Veterans Administration Medical Center (VAMC) will temporarily operate using the emergency power grid for facility operations beginning at 8:00 a.m. on July 14, 2012.  The power outage will not affect medical services to Veterans but it will temporarily disable in-house computer services.  Medical center officials are asking Veterans and their families to help conserve energy by limiting phone calls on Saturday.
“We are stepping back in time to move forward,” said James Galkowski, Associate Director of Operations.  “By upgrading our electrical grid for the new server, we will be well-prepared to support future technologies and a new phone system for improved services to our Veterans.  Since the telephone system will operate on battery back-up, we are asking our Veterans and their families to help us conserve energy by limiting phone calls on Saturday.”
Medical center leadership and key staff held several meetings in advance to prepare for the temporary outage.  The medical center is expected to resume to full operations before 8 p.m. on Saturday.     Medical and support staff prepared for the temporary outage by implementing parts of the emergency contingency operations plan.  Staff pre-printed lab and medical orders, pharmacy refills, dialysis orders, food supply tickets and coordinated with the local area hospital.  The medical center Emergency Department, pharmacy, dialysis and other services will be available for Veterans with limited lab services on Saturday.
