Fayetteville VA Medical Center kicking off national Homeless Veterans Outreach Campaign
October 4, 2011
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Fayetteville VA Medical Center will host a special event Oct. 12 to kick off the Department of Veterans Affairs Homeless Veterans Outreach Campaign.
Opening ceremonies for the event will take place at the North Carolina Veterans Park, 300 Bragg Blvd. in Fayetteville at 10 a.m., and transition to Fayetteville's Festival Park on the corner of Rowan and Ray Streets at 11 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Homeless Veterans or those at risk of becoming homeless will be able to access information about enrolling for VA health benefits; get assistance with filing disability claims; and get medical, dental and vision screenings. VA specialists, community partners and faith-based organizations will also be available to provide information on a variety of assistance programs that were developed specifically for homeless Veterans.
Food and entertainment will be provided during the event, and there will be activities for Veterans' children as well. Federal, state and community leaders have been invited to participate.
Fayetteville is one of 28 rural and major urban communities around the country that have been selected to kick off the new VA campaign, with each hosting similar events around the same time frame. Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki has vowed to end homelessness among Veterans by 2015, and this campaign is an extension of the promise.
Organizations interested in participating in the event should contact Ennit Bryant at (910) 488-2120, extension 7744. Anyone who knows a homeless Veteran is asked to encourage them to come out to the event so they can access the benefits they earned by their service to the country.
